Motor Carrier Safety Ratings
Carrier safety ratings have taken on a new meaning since the the Schramm v. Foster case, which established that third-party logistics providers can be held liable for the negligence of carriers they hire. We make the carrier selection process easier to manage by including current and historical carrier safety ratings. CarrierGuard enables you to evaluate your entire carrier base automatically to assess risk, and we alert you to changes in carrier safety ratings.

Determining Safety Fitness of Motor Carriers
Part 358 of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations establishes procedures to determine the safety fitness of motor carriers, to assign safety ratings, to take remedial action when required, and to prohibit motor carriers receiving an unsatisfactory safety rating from operating a commercial vehicle to transport hazardous materials requiring placarding, or transporting 16 or more passengers, including the driver.

When a motor carrier is inspected, one of three possible carrier safety ratings is issued by the U.S. Department of Transportation based on the safety fitness of the carrier.

Satisfactory
No evidence of substantial non-compliance with safety requirements.

Carrier has in place and functioning adequate safety management controls to meet the safety fitness standard prescribed in Section 385.5. Safety management controls are adequate if they are appropriate for the size and type of operation of the particular motor carrier.

Conditional
Carrier was out of compliance with one or more safety requirements.

Motor carrier does not have adequate safety management controls in place to ensure compliance with safety fitness standard that could result in occurrences in Section 385.5 (a) through (h).

Unsatisfactory
Evidence of substantial non-compliance with safety requirements.

Motor carrier lacks adequate safety management controls in place to ensure compliance with safety fitness, which has resulted in occurrences in Section 385.5 (a) through (h). Motor carriers with an unsatisfactory safety rating may be subject to Section 385.13.
